What I’m Reading- I Don’t Belong to You: Quiet the Noise & Find Your Voice

You normally wouldn’t find memoirs from twenty two year olds sitting on my night stand, but for this one, I made an exception. It started when I got the lightening bolt of inspiration to figure out a way to have Keke Palmer on WhatRUWearing’s Podcast. ¬†She is the perfect WhatRUWearing celebrity. She is confident, talented, stylish AF, and encourages others to be the best versions of themselves.

So as I started to put out feelers to my network to see if anyone could connect me, (she and her family are from Chicago and the 6 six degrees of separation is more like 1 for Black Chicago. No seriously, I’m 1 degree from the Obamas) I was successful in getting into her camp and on the phone with the woman managing her book release tour.

After chatting for a little about what I would like to propose to Keke, what my website is about and her book, I hung up the phone hitting ‘purchase’ on Amazon and marking a date on my calendar a few weeks out that Keke might be back in Chicago. I Don’t Belong to You is a nice diary approach to story telling. Keke goes into detail about how she and her family made it from Robbins, IL to Los Angeles, how her career took off, the up’s and down’s and what that did to her and her family while she was a girl transitioning through life phases. Although the book is filled with emoji’s and lol’s, you can tell that Keke was blessed with a wise soul that isn’t done maturing. I enjoyed her story and would definitely give it to my daughters to read if they were teenagers.

And most importantly, no matter what else happens from me reaching out to her people besides me buying and reading her book, I am now 1 degree from Keke Palmer!

Love Farissa.
